Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic who is also a public speech writer. Feminist Frequency is a website which hosts video and commentary looking at the portrayal of women by pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian has been a blogger, journalist and award-winning feminist for over a decade. Feminist Frequency is a site dedicated to education, which examines female roles in popular culture, is directed by Sarkeesian. She is committed to deconstructing stereotypes about women and how they are portrayed in popular culture. In addition, she seeks to educate people about internet-based harassment targeting women, as well as other marginalized groups of individuals. Sarkeesian, who holds a Master's in Social and Political Thinking with a degree from York University, is also a highly sought after public speaker. She has given speeches at the TEDxWomen XOXO Festival and United Nations Broadband Working Group to Gender. Since her early years, Sarkeesian was fascinated by the issues surrounding gender identity and feminist ideas. When she was still in school, in 2009 she created the Feminist Frequency site. The site was about to launch a series of web-based videos that explored the gender representations in video games when she became the victim of harassment online. It didn't deter her, however it did strengthen her resolve as feminist critique of the media. Her notable contributions to the field of feminists are recognized with numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the director of Feminist Frequency an educational and non-profit organization that explores the representations of women in pop-culture stories.
